Knee Replacement

Learn more about your condition including ways to start your health recovery journey.

In knee osteoarthritis, the cartilage that cushions the bones within the knee gradually deteriorates. This condition can affect the entire knee joint or be confined to a specific region.

Knee replacement surgery is a highly effective procedure for relieving pain, improving mobility, and enhancing the quality of life for individuals with severe knee damage. It involves replacing damaged parts of the knee joint with artificial implants, allowing smoother joint function and reducing discomfort.

The implants from SHALBY MedTech are designed to restore function and provide excellent performance, enabling you to resume an active lifestyle as long as your surgeon permits it.

The knee is divided into three primary compartments:
  • Medial compartment: located on the inner side of the knee.
  • Lateral compartment: situated on the outer side of the knee.
  • Patellofemoral compartment: found at the front of the knee, between the kneecap and the thighbone.
  • There are different ways to treat knee arthritis, and your doctor will help you find the best option to ease your pain and improve your movement.

Types of Knee Replacement Surgeries

Total Knee Replacement Surgery (TKR)

In Total Knee Replacement, whole cartilage and part of the damaged bones are removed from the knee joint, and a metal and plastic implant (Prosthesis) is substituted. This surgery is commonly recommended for patients with advanced osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, or significant knee injuries.

Am I the right Candidate for it?

TKR may be the right choice if you experience

  • When both the compartments of knee are damage, shown in the x-ray by the surgeon.
  • Severe knee pain or stiffness that makes everyday tasks like walking, climbing stairs, or sitting down and standing up difficult.
  • Moderate to severe knee pain even when resting, whether during the day or at night.
  • Persistent knee swelling and inflammation that doesn’t get better with rest or medications.
  • Visible changes in the knee, such as bowing inward or outward.
  • Lack of improvement despite trying other treatments.

Procedure:

Bone Preparation. The damaged cartilage surfaces at the ends of the femur and tibia are removed

Implant Positioning. The removed cartilage and bone are replaced with a metal femur and tibia baseplate that recreates the surface of the femur and tibia bones. These metal parts may be cemented or press-fit into the bone.

Patella Resurfacing. The patella, known as the kneecap, is cut and resurfaced with a plastic oval or circular button. On a case-by-case basis, surgeons may not replace the patella.

Recovery:

  • Most hospital stays are overnight, but some cases may require a longer stay
  • Your medical team will manage your pain to support a faster recovery.
  • Exercise is essential for recovery, especially in the first few weeks.
  • Most daily activities can be resumed within 3 to 6 weeks.
  • Some pain during activity and at night is normal for a few weeks’ post-surgery.
